As we enter the week before winter break we will continue to work on solving math story problems involving three addends. These may be addition, subtraction or even multiplication problems for those of us who understand that idea. We are finding out that it is imperative to draw each part of the problem out and to cross off information that is not needed within the problem. Then it is okay to assign a number sentence (equation) to our drawing.
Many of us are having difficulty figuring out that "How many more" or "How much longer" is a comparison where a DIFFERENCE between two numbers if found.
Many of us are coming up with the correct answer but the assigned equation is not representative of the story problem.
In reading, we are identifying setting, characters, events, problem and solution. We are also comparing stories using Venn diagrams. A character trait should describe a character's actions/personality that lasts throughout the story and not just for one event.
We are REALLY working on improving our use of spelling strategies and writing in COMPLETE sentences. We have written one sloppy copy (draft) of an event that happened to us using temporal words and better descriptive words, e.g., I liked the book. It was good. = I enjoyed the part in the story where the boy stuck his blanket in his pants to hide it. That was hilarious!.
Inscience, we are learning about different forces and how they move differing objects. We are using words like, friction, push, pull, see-saw, fulcrum. We will experiment with magnets and use words like repel and attract.
We will apply this knowledge to design ways to move the belongings of a fictional family across a canyon as part of our CULTURAL ADVENTURE that combines science, social studies, reading, writing AND math skills.
