Ant farm, food plates, plant cycles, US symbols, nouns, verbs and adjectives oh my!

Ok, so NOW we know that we can't just catch ants while outside at recess. An honest to goodness ant farm needs a queen and her OWN drones. Ms. Wolohojian, (our biology and all things bug expert...see previous post,) is in the process of acquiring these for us.
A study of plant cycles is beginning. We are asking how certain foods get to our tables. There are a LOT of steps!
MyPlate.gov has that fun game called BLAST OFF! Many of us are enjoying learning about the five major food groups as revised by the government this past summer. The plate shows us that the largest piece of our daily food plate is vegetables and that the meat group is no longer. Now it's called the protein group, e.g., beans, eggs, and just a bit o' meat.
We are learning to sort words into categories including nouns, verbs and adjectives. We are also organizing words into alphabetical order. There seems to be order in many living and nonliving things!
Did you know there really was a man named Sam who the character Uncle Sam is modeled after? Did you know the Statue of Liberty was a gift from France? The Liberty Bell is in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Many of us thought Philadelphia was a state. It's so much to take in!
Digits, tens, ones, place value, before, after, more, less should be etched in our brains. We are hoping to complete the place value unit in math and move on to decomposing numbers. Each number can be made many different ways.
10 = 8 +2 or 7+1+2 or 5 +5 or 4 +6 or 9 +1 or 6 +3 +1
Also, the number 21 is heavier than 12 as shown when I build each number on a number scale. I read it from left to right... 21 > 12 ..."21 is greater than 12.
